ENGLISH FOR THE ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT
This course can be modified for either non-native professors or non-native students. The primary goals of this course are to emphasize grammatical usage of English within the "whole language" approach and to empower participants to have more effective academic interactions. Students and professors will develop reading, writing, and speaking fluency and will sharpen their listening comprehension skills.

Barbara's class with students from Panama, Venezuela, Russia, Mexico, and Finland.
Presentation skills will include: structuring information, emphasizing/minimizing information, utilizing appropriate language register (formal and informal), maintaining effective body language and eye contact, and monitoring pace of delivery, volume and intonation.
Class discussion skills will include asking for/giving opinions, agreeing/disagreeing, interrupting/taking the floor, making recommendations, expressing support/opposition, persuading/compromising, asking for clarification/answering questions, and summarizing.
